Privacy Policy for Reading Assistant

Summary

Reading Assistant does not have user accounts, does not run analytics or advertising SDKs, and does not send your notes or documents to any server we operate. Almost everything happens entirely on your device.

What the app stores, and where

• Notes and imported documents: stored only in the app's private local storage on your device (Android SharedPreferences)
• Settings (voice choice, speed, pitch, font size, theme, color palette, dyslexia mode): stored locally on your device the same way
• Backup export/import (Pro feature): creates a zip file on your device and hands it to Android's share sheet; we don't receive a copy

Text-to-speech and voices

Reading Assistant reads text aloud using either of two engines you choose between in Settings:

• Offline neural voices (Piper and Kokoro, via the open-source sherpa-onnx engine): the voice model is downloaded once, over the internet, directly from its public GitHub release (github com/k2-fsa/sherpa-onnx) After that one-time download, all speech generation happens entirely on your device - no text you read is ever sent anywhere for these voices
• Android system voices: your device's built-in Text-to-Speech engine Most system voices run entirely on-device Some higher-quality voices your device offers may be marked as requiring a network connection - if you choose one of these, the text you're reading is sent to that voice engine's provider to be spoken, subject to that provider's own privacy policy

Payments (Reading Assistant Pro)

The one-time "Reading Assistant Pro" purchase is processed entirely by Google Play Billing. We never see or store your payment details.

Permissions

The app requests internet access for two purposes only: downloading the neural voice models you choose to install, and letting the Pro purchase flow talk to Google Play Billing.

Children's privacy

Reading Assistant does not knowingly collect data from anyone. The app is not directed at children, but nothing in it requires an account or collects personal information from any user.
