Weave

Help & Support

Everything you need to connect Weave to your storage, build your library and watch from anywhere.

Getting started

  1. Open Weave and tap Get started. On Android 17 and later, allow Local network access so Weave can reach devices on your Wi-Fi.
  2. Weave scans your network for file servers. Tap yours, or choose Enter address.
  3. Enter a username and password if your server needs them (leave blank for guest access), confirm the share name (tap Find shares on this server if you're unsure), then tap Connect.
  4. Pick your Movies and TV folders. Weave usually detects them automatically. Tap Build my library.

Compatible storage

Anything that shares files over SMB 2 or SMB 3 (Windows file sharing): Synology, QNAP, Asustor, TrueNAS, Unraid and Western Digital NAS devices; USB drives on routers such as Netgear ReadySHARE, ASUS AiDisk and TP-Link USB Sharing; and shared folders on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Common share names

Organizing your library

Weave builds your library from file and folder names. These layouts work best:

Movies/
  Serenity (2005)/Serenity (2005).mkv
  Big Buck Bunny (2008).mp4
TV/
  Show Name/
    Season 1/Show Name S01E01 Episode Title.mkv
    Season 2/Show Name S02E01.mkv

Release-style names like Movie.Title.2019.1080p.x264.mkv are cleaned up automatically. Subtitle files with the same name as the video (Movie.en.srt) are picked up automatically. Pull down on Home to rescan after adding files.

Watching away from home

Weave never asks you to open ports on your router. Instead, use a VPN that puts your phone on your home network. Tailscale is free for personal use and takes about ten minutes:

  1. Install Tailscale on a computer at home that stays on, and sign in.
  2. Share a route to your storage from that computer. To share just your NAS (recommended), run:
    tailscale set --advertise-routes=<your-NAS-address>/32
replacing the address with your NAS's address.
  3. In the Tailscale admin console, open that computer → Edit route settings → approve the route.
  4. Install Tailscale on your phone, sign in with the same account and keep Use Tailscale subnets turned on.
  5. That's it. Weave uses the same address as at home whenever Tailscale is connected.

If your NAS can run Tailscale itself (Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS and Unraid can), install it there instead and add the NAS using its 100.x.y.z Tailscale address.

Playback

Which formats are supported?

MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, WebM and MPEG-TS containers, with H.264, H.265/HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video where your phone supports them in hardware. Audio: AAC, MP3, Opus, FLAC and Vorbis everywhere; Dolby Digital (AC-3/E-AC-3) and DTS depend on your phone's decoders. Most Samsung phones include Dolby.

Gestures and controls

Double-tap the left or right of the picture to skip back 10 or forward 30 seconds, and double-tap the middle to pause. The zoom button switches between Fit, Zoom and Stretch. Leaving the app while a video plays opens picture-in-picture. Audio, subtitle and speed options are in the player's settings menu.

Video plays but there's no sound

Your phone can't decode that audio format (DTS is the usual cause). Choose another audio track in the player settings if the file has one.

Remote playback stutters

Away from home, playback is limited by your home internet's upload speed. 1080p usually needs 5–10 Mbps. Weave doesn't transcode, so smaller HEVC files stream best remotely.

Troubleshooting

"Can't reach" my server

Check that your phone is on the same Wi-Fi as the server (or that your VPN is connected when away), that the address is right, and on Android 17+ that Local network access is allowed in Settings → Apps → Weave → Permissions. Some mesh Wi-Fi systems put phones on a separate network from the main router; Weave checks common router addresses for this, but you can always enter the address manually.

"Rejected the sign-in"

Double-check the username and password. Some routers use the router's admin account for protected shares.

Library is missing files

Make sure the files are inside the folders chosen in Settings → Library folders, then pull down on Home to rescan. For TV, keep one folder per show.
